The all-new 2012 Saab 9-4X is slated to make its official debut at the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show. However, images and details of the new crossover have already hit the Web.
Based largely on the Cadillac SRX, it’s powered by the same 3.0-liter V6 and turbocharged 2.8-liter V6 engines. The former produces 265 horsepower while the latter produces 300 hp. Both units are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The base 9-4X is available with front- or all-wheel drive, but the turbocharged model is only available with Saab’s torque-vectoring XWD all-wheel-drive system. The sporty Aero models will feature a DriveSense adaptive chassis system which delivers three different drive setups: Comfort, Sport and Eco.
“The 9-4X significantly broadens the appeal of the Saab brand,” says Saab Automobile CEO Jan Åke Jonsson, “It gives us entry to the fast-growing crossover segment with a vehicle that reflects our brand values in key areas, such as progressive Scandinavian design and sporty, responsible driving performance. The 9-4X is an exciting package and we’re confident it will appeal to many existing Saab owners, as well as win new customers for the brand.”
While the exterior of the 9-4X is reminiscent of the Caddy, the interior is all Saab. The cockpit-like, driver-focused center stack and push-button ignition on the center console is very similar to the all-new 9-5 sedan. Expect plenty of high-quality materials too, like those found inside the SRX.
Although the all-new Saab 9-4X is based on a vehicle that’s already been on the market for quite a while, the SRX has been a tremendously successful model for Cadillac, which bodes well for Saab. Regardless, to generate sales volume in the premium segment, a luxury crossover is a necessity.
